An Event Log report is a report which provides us the information about the various events occurring in a system. A user can view these reports and respond to the events for safeguarding the entire system. A user should configure the Windows Event Log Management mechanism in his system for viewing these reports. For effective Log Management and Network Management a user can refer the Event Log Management Software. In Windows XP after manual configuration a user can monitor the event logs of application (error, warning, or information, etc.), security (audit, events, etc.), forwarded events and system (domain controllers).

For activating the Event log a Windows XP user would have to go to the Control Panel for selecting the option of Performance & Maintenance. Select the Computer Management/ MMC inclusive of Event Viewer snap-in from Administrative Tools. Click Event Viewer to view the logs at vent Viewer Window.

For monitoring the event logs a Windows XP user would have to go to the Control Panel for selecting the option of Performance & Maintenance. Select the Computer Management/ MMC inclusive of Event Viewer snap-in from Administrative Tools. Select the expand Event Viewer from the Console Tree and select the logs containing desired information. View the events from details pane. A user can also move the information to another MS Word page.

The Event log includes the following information:
Date          : Date of the event.
Time          : Time of the event.
User          : The user name
Computer : computer name.
Event ID    :  Event number.
Source      : The source of the event.
Type          : Error type which can be Information, Success Audit, or Failure, etc.
Category  : A segregation of the event source.

For searching the events a Windows XP user would have to go to the Control Panel for selecting the option of Performance & Maintenance. Select the Computer Management/ MMC inclusive of Event Viewer snap-in from Administrative Tools. Select expand Event Viewer from the Console Tree. Click find in the View menu.  Enter the log details in Find dialog box and click the option of Find Next.

For filtering the log events a Windows XP user would have to go to the Control Panel for selecting the option of Performance & Maintenance. Select the Computer Management/ MMC inclusive of Event Viewer snap-in from Administrative Tools. Select expand Event Viewer from the Console Tree. Click Filter Tab from View menu.

For setting the log size a Windows XP user would have to go to the Control Panel for selecting the option of Performance & Maintenance. Select the Computer Management/ MMC inclusive of Event Viewer snap-in from Administrative Tools. Click the expand Event Viewer from the Console Tree. Set the log size (in Log size) and then click the Overwrite Option. Click OK after selecting the Clear Log option.
This is a very lengthy method of Windows Event Log Management. For effective log management & network management a user would have to use a Event Log Management Software. The Lepide Event Log Manager is a good example.
